Railway Minister Expresses his Profound Grief Over the Loss of Innocent Lives in Train Accident Near Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh


12 Dead and 45 Injured in the Side Collision of Krishak Express and Lucknow - Barauni Express Trains
 

Enhanced Amount of Ex-Gratia of Rs. 2 Lakh to the Next Kin of the Dead Announced


In an unfortunate side collision accident between Krishak Express and Lucknow - Barauni Express near Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh in late hours yesterday night, 12 persons lost their lives and 45 persons suffered injuries out of which 12 grievously injured and 33 simply injured. Injured persons were transported to different hospitals at Gorakhpur i.e. Medical College Hospital, Distt. Hospital, Air Force Hospital and Railway Hospital, Gorakhpur.

Train No. 15007 Up Manduadih-Lucknow Krishak Express passed through Kusmhi station at 22.45 hours yesterday i.e. 30.09.2014 and was required to stop at Up Home Signal of Gorakhpur Cantt. But the Loco Pilot overshot Up Home Signal and side collided with General Coach (GS) of 15204 Dn Lucknow-Barauni Express which was leaving Gorakhpur Cantt. station towards Chhapra. As a result, one General Coach derailed by two wheels and two General Coaches capsized. Prima-facie cause of the accident was reported as overshooting of Up Home Signal by Loco Pilot of 15007 Up Krishak Express.

The Minister of Railways Shri D.V.Sadananda Gowda accompanied by Chairman, Railway Board, Shri Arunendra Kumar, Director General, Railway Health Services, Dr. M.K.Budhalakoti and Director General, Railway Protection Force, Shri Krishna Chaudhary, has left Delhi for accident site. Shri Gowda has termed the train accident as most unfortunate and expressed his profound grief over the loss of innocent lives. He has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2/- lakh to the next kin of the dead, Rs. 1/- lakh each to grievously injured passengers and Rs. 20,000 to those who sustained simple injuries. Shri Gowda has given instructions to Railway officials for free of cost effective medical treatment of the injured passengers. He also directed Railways to make arrangements to allow free train journey to relatives of victims who wants to visit the accident site.

Relief/restoration arrangements were quickly initiated and Accident Relief Medical Van/Gorakhpur was ordered at 23.15 hours which reached the site at 00.35 hours. Railways have set up Helplines at various places including at Gorakhpur -0551-2203265, Gonda 05262-229634, Lucknow 0522-2233042, Varanasi 0542-2226778, 0542 – 2224742, Hajipur, 06224 – 272230, Siwan – 09693690854, Sonpur – 06158-221639, Chhapra -09006693233, Gorakhpur Cantt -0551-2203149.

A few trains were short terminated due to this accident. However, after war-footing relief/rescue operation carried by Railways, both Up and Down tracks at the accident site were declared fit for train operation at 08.35 onward on 01.10.2014. Loco Pilot and Assistant Loco pilot of 15007 Manduadih-Lucknow Krishak Express have been suspended.

An inquiry has been ordered by Railways under Commissioner Railway Safety, Eastern Circle, to ascertain the cause of the accident.
